The Qutub Minar is tallest brick minaret in the world. It was completed in the 13th century. It stands out as being the highest stone tower ever to have been built in India, stretching up an impressive 72.5 meters (237.8 ft) into the sky. It has 399 steps that lead up to the top.
Qutb-u'd-Din Aibak originally conceived Qutub Minar in the year 1199. Its purpose was to provide the Mu'azzin a majestic place to give calls to prayer in the Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque. Not to be outdone, his son-in-law, Shamsu'd-Din Iitutmish added three more stories to it. It was not until 1368 that the fifth and last story was added.
Qutub Minar is made of fluted red sandstone. It is covered with intricate carvings and verses from the Qur'an. The tower is located on the ruins of the Red Citadel.
